CVS Image Handling Is Leaving NNNNNNNN.TMP Files in the Data Directory

Technote Number: 1095510

Problem:
Domino 5.x

This issue was reported to Quality Engineering and has been addressed in Domino
Release 5.0.10.

Excerpt from the Lotus Notes and Domino Release 5.0.10 MR fix list (available
at http://www.notes.net):

MIME - MIME to CD conversion
SPR# PLYS562UHL - Fixed a problem where temporary files were not deleted after
a conversion failure

In one case, a custom agent appeared to be the culprit. The agent failed on a
mail item that included a GIF image. Once the agent manager was turned off,
the temporary files were no longer created.

Domino 6.x

This issue was reported to Quality Engineering and has been addressed in Domino
6.5.3 and Domino 6.5.2 Fix Pack (FP1).

Excerpt from the Lotus Notes and Domino Release 6.5.3 and 6.5.2 FP1 fix lists
(available at http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/lotus):

Server - MIME
SPR# JUYA5VW5YT - Temp files are no longer being left behind during the MIME to
CD conversion. Prior to this fix, when an image conversion occurred in MIME to
CD conversion, an "nnnnnnnn.tmp" file was created but sometimes left undeleted
in the data directory. This problem has been fixed in 6.0.5, 6.5.3 and 6.5.2
FP1.

In one particular case it was noticed that excessive NNNNNNNN.TMP files were
created after the Administration Process (AdminP) ran each week when it renamed
Reader and Author fields. During this process the Domino server used all of
the available memory, resulting in a server hang. AdminP was so memory
intensive that it was not possible to run simple commands at the OS (such as
"ls" or "rm") because there was not enough memory.

It was found that the source of the excess temporary files created on the
Domino server was because AdminP requests to rename users will process all the
mail files that have the Access Control -> Advanced Action setting to 'Modify
all Readers and Authors fields', or to 'Modify all Names fields'. Mail
documents that are received and stored in MIME format are converted to Domino
(CD) format in order for AdminP to process them. When an image is processed
during MIME to CD conversion, NNNNNNNN.TMP files will be created, but left
undeleted in the data directory in some cases.
